Fast becoming the most sought after venue in South Africa
for artists, crafters and flea-market fanatics, the Village
Green Fair is now far more than just a by-product of the National
Arts Festival and is an event in its own right.
It has grown from just over 100 stalls in 1989 to
over 1000 last year, and looks set to be even bigger
this year. The Village Green Fair is a vibrant, colourful
kaleidoscope collection of the best crafts from within South
Africa and from neighbouring countries.
It has two sections - a 'tent city' (comprising The Village
Green and The Village Green Outdoor Trading Area)
and the informal sector:
| Tent City |
Informal Sector |
The 'tent city', sponsored by Transnet Foundation, accommodating
nearly 300 crafters and food vendors on Fiddlers
Green including an African Craft Tent which is
separately sponsored by the Eastern Cape Tourism Board. |
Situated in the city's magnificent Church Square, the
informal sector caters for daily traders, further
food vendors and family entertainment in
the form of street theatre, a mobile snake park and a
mini bungy jump. |
The funds raised from the leasing of stalls and stands provide
a much-needed injection of cash for many disadvantaged communities
in Grahamstown. The service clubs involved in the organisation
of the Fair distribute these funds.
