Promoting a culture of science in South Africa, in a festive
way
SciFest Africa, or the National Festival of Science,
Engineering and Technology as it is formally titled, was launched
in 1997 as a high-profile event to:
 |
break through popular misconceptions
and create a new mind-set about science, engineering and
technology; |
 |
allow scientists the opportunity to make
science accessible to and within the reach of ordinary
people; and |
 |
show that science, engineering and technology
underpin our business and every-day activities.
|
The first of its kind in Southern Africa, SciFest Africa which
is held annually in late-March in Grahamstown offers a spectrum
of no less than 400 events and activities including lectures,
workshops, demonstrations, exhibitions, excursions, science
olympics, a film-fest and street parades in just seven days.
SciFest Africa has something for all from 5 to 85-plus years
of age, and attendance now exceeds 40 000 visitors annually.
