Makana Edutourism Project
The Makana Edutourism Project (MEP) is a project of the Grahamstown Foundation (GF) in partnership with the Makana Local Municipality (MLM) and Makana Tourism. This partnership continues to work together to realise the Project’s main objective of contributing to the inclusive development of the Makana local economy through developing and exploiting the region’s competitive advantages in education, the arts and tourism. The MEP has established a brand as well as a good network and small, but growing, membership base in the region and aims at strategically promoting the Makana region as a preferred Edutourism destination.
The MEP responds to the need for local economic opportunities in a region characterised by high poverty, unemployment and dependency through the development of edutourism products and packages that include both established and emerging enterprises, institutions and initiatives. By facilitating linkages between a range of established and emerging initiatives in well-marketed packages, the MEP will promote more stable visitor flows to a larger number of enterprises, will support new enterprises in forming part of Edutourism packages, and inter alia contribute to the development of new sources of income.
